Many businesses move to SharePoint because they want remote access, better collaboration and less reliance on an ageing server humming away in a cupboard. Fair enough. The mistake is assuming SharePoint behaves exactly like a mapped drive. It does not. Used well, SharePoint gives you better search, version history, collaboration and governance. Used badly, it becomes a confusing cloud folder system that everyone bypasses.
So which is better? It depends on what is on the drive. Here is the honest version.

Where SharePoint wins

Where file servers can still make sense
- High-volume CAD, media or specialist files that do not suit SharePoint sync.
- Legacy applications that expect local paths or SMB shares.
- Very large archive repositories better suited to cheaper storage.
- Operational environments where internet dependency is not acceptable.
We are not SharePoint zealots. If you run a design studio with multi-gigabyte CAD files, we will tell you to keep those on local storage and move everything else. A hybrid answer is often the right one.
